Graef Headquarters, Milwaukee, WI

3Form Varia Ecoresin, aluminum and neon

2021

For Graef’s new Milwaukee headquarters, martin worked to create a suspended work of Art consisting of 157 suspended swallows and 3 neon, wall-mounted birds. 157 forms included because at the time of installation, 157 people were working here – and this piece is intended to be a reflection of those workers and Graef’s family.

In meeting with members of Graef’s team, martin walked away with a realization to draw from: these employees see themselves as part of a strong family that together is thoughtful, intelligent, insightful, aware of each other and their shared goals.

The swallow bird became the repeated form because it is a symbol of fidelity; representing strong and important relationships. Swallows are devoted to their partners and the people who draw a similarity to them are known to do anything to help their family, to make sure others are okay, and to show deep care for every detail.

Swallow spirit animals protect homes and direct people towards goodness. In many cultures around the world, people believe that when the swallow develops a nest, there will be happiness. And before the days of advanced navigation systems, sailors would only know they were near land once they spotted swallows in the skies, representing images of a safe return home.

So for this home, and to everyone here and for all who walk with and under our family; we share our goals, awareness and connections to one another and each other.
